Hindutva Terrorism in India

Image
In the name of protecting cows, members of extremist outfits affiliated to India’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are attacking Muslims.  On June 29, a mob beat up and killed Asgar Ansari, a 45-year-old Muslim trader in the eastern state of Jharkhand, for allegedly carrying beef in his car. Three days earlier, a Muslim dairy owner, Usman Ansari, was beaten up and his house set on fire; a cow carcass was reportedly found near his house. In September 2015 a Muslim man from a village near Delhi was lynched after being accused of storing beef in his freezer. The past seven years have seen a total of 63 cases of violence triggered by 'cow protection', of which 20 happened in the first six months of 2017. What is more disturbing in these numbers is that out of the 28, deaths 24 were Muslims, which is a whooping 86 percent of the total fatalities As many of 97% of these attacks were reported after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s go

The alarming condition of farmers in the State of Maharashtra can be linked to socio-economic aspects. Farmers fall into debts because have to face a scarce crops productivity (GM seeds, water management, etc.) which increase the risk of their profit and high cost of life (education, health, daughter marriage, etc.). This creates a vicious cycle and most of the time farmers suffer of mental distress. Often they might see the su cide as the only solution for their families. 1 Farmer's Suicide Every 30 Minute 33,000 Suicides From 2009 It is estimated that more than a quarter of a million Indian farmers have committed suicide in the last 16 years—the largest wave of recorded suicides in human history. Menstrual Taboos in India

Image
A menstrual taboo involves menstruation being professed as impure or awkward. It extends even to the mention of menstruation both in public and in private. Our understanding of menstruation was vague prior to science clarifying it. Thus a lot of bizarre beliefs were twisted to explain periods in primeval communities and cultures. I believe at least some of us will agree to the fact that the menstrual cycle is a natural process intrinsically linked with a woman’s body. Still many of them follow restrictions during  menstrual cycles, whether it’s in our homes, our relatives’ homes or at any religious event. The freedom of women continues to be in the hands of dominant patriarchal discourse. Even today in era of 2018 India and parts of South Asia, there are families, who treat a menstruating woman in a very humiliating way, and her attendance at the holy places in the house or in social functions is considered ill-fated. Menstruation stigma gives justification for authorita

Democracy without the free movement of the press is a misnomer. None can undermine the importance of press in democracy. First of all, it offers us a lot of news about the day-to-day happenings of the world. Thus it keeps us always alive to the goings on of the globe. The newspapers publish all these news  political, social and religious. It must have the right to publish, these without any fear from any external authority. In countries where democracy prevails, freedom of the press is preserved and thus helps the individual considerably to frame his own judgments about issues. It also makes the Government, aware of the lapses or short

Tweet or Not !

Twitter garners massive power all on its own. The people who use it make quirky and short posts , or rather tweets as the people in the Twitter universe like to call it, every few hours or so or as frequently as they deem appropriate and they are more or less all set. Since most of the Twitter users are celebrities and people of power, Twitter acts as more of a connecting ground between the rich and famous and the ones that unfortunately aren’t so. Thus, instead of a social media platform, Twitter has turned into a more of a tabloid that people use to talk to and talk about celebrities and the famous all day long. Even though Twitter was created and launched in 2006, it wasn’t until 2010 that it gained popularity and became the most used social media account, superseding Facebook in its rise to the top. In 2012, the use was Twitter was at its all time high with its users posting a grand total of 360 million tweets a day. With such a humongous su
